2016STROKEPLAY 002

(l-r): Dave Limbach (Penrith), Denis Dale, Col Kenning (Kiama).

Twin Creeks’ Denis Dale won the 24th holding of the prestigious NSW Veterans State Strokeplay Championships in Western Sydney at his first attempt by a whopping 10 strokes.

In his victory speech, Dale uttered the words the organisers wanted to hear.

“I have really enjoyed this tournament and will return to Western Sydney to defend my title next year,” he said.

The highly-regarded Australian Seniors champion golfer was a welcome addition to the strongest field of veteran golfers ever assembled for this event.

Over 60 players in the full field of 144 were single-figure handicap players.

With rounds of 71 (Richmond), 72 (Penrith) and 72 (Stonecutters Ridge) for a total scratch score of 215, Dale won comfortably from Penrith golfer Dave Limbach (225), with 4-time winner Col Kenning (Kiama) one stroke further back on 226.

In the first two rounds, Kenning, with scores of 72 and 73, had seriously challenged Dale but in the final round Dale’s consistency won through.

“I was in there with a big chance but missing several putts in the 5-10 foot range on the final day proved my undoing,”Kenning said.

Finishing fourth in the tournament was local Leonay golfer Laurie Cupples tied with James Hogg (Stonebridge) on 228.

The tournament nett winner was Fred Wernicke (Stonecutters Ridge) from Col Faulkner (Rosnay).

Tournament director Les Knox said they were blessed with fine weather.

“Three great courses presented in excellent shape, and a full field of quality players from all over the State,” he said.

Mr Knox was particularly excited about the strong representation of country golfers in the field.
